Watch Eastenders tops latest soap ratings with highest festive viewing figures

Eastenders last night posted the highest rating for any show over the Christmas and New Year's period to date.

The latest episode beat out movie premieres and comedies to be watched by more than 8 million viewers last night, the first programme to have beaten the 8 million barrier this festive period.

It was the show's biggest rating for months, with the episode last reaching those numbers back in April of this year.

Over on ITV and the two instalments of Coronation Street interested 7.8 million and 7.5 million while 6.7 million watched Emmerdale.

Later on in the night and ITV's Christmas Epic Fails lived up to its name with just 2.6 million viewers, although the BBC didn't fare too well either with The Muppets which had just 100,000 more viewers.

On Channel 4 and 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdwon had 2.1 million viewers
