EastEnders got 2015 off to a stonking start last night with over 8.5 million viewers watching.
The average audience of 8.53 million tuned in for the show's New Year's Day special as a car crash caused chaos on the streets of Walford.
It's left two characters fighting for their lives ahead of the latest episode tonight on BBC One.
A peak audience of over 10.4 million were watching as the soap also enjoyed its highest rating for almost two years having last hit such highs back in January of 2013.
It's made EastEnders the highest watched show of New Year's Day, beating competition from Miranda (7.3 million) and Mrs Brown's Boys (7.9 million), as well as Road Dahl's Esio Trot (6.5 million).
ITV struggled against the Beeb's tough schedule with Emmerdale being their most watched show of the night, posting a total of 5.8 million viewers including ITV+1.
Birds Of A Feather continued its revival with a perhaps disappointing 3.7 million even with the competition in mind.
